Outreach News

In September all the LifeLine Centres in Gauteng presented the SAPS with certificates and cake to thank them for keeping SA safe during the World Cup. The above photo shows Bophelong staff and counsellors with the SAPS.

Mamello Service Centre – Sebokeng

Our Service Centre in Sebokeng has moved to their new location at Lesabasaba Primary School in Zone 13. A classroom was allocated to us and this was renovated to make an office and two counselling rooms. Some of the counsellors who had previously been volunteering have also decided to return to offer their services again. It has really been going well and has been very busy. We have also started doing HCT and this, too, is going very well. This service has not been advertised but is happening by word of mouth and the number of people making use of the service is growing. Keke Nkabinde is the Supervisor of this Centre and is taking the Centre forward in leaps and bounds!
On 26th April Mamello celebrated their 6th birthday!! A birthday cake and other snacks and cold drinks were available to the counsellors and other participants at Mamello on the day! Eating and singing took place with a few words of encouragement and testimony from various counsellors and some staff at the Lesabasaba School community centre.

Khensani Service Centre – Sharpeville

Although quite a number of counsellors have found alternative employment with the promise of stipends, the services continue. Joyce Malaoa is the Supervisor in charge of this Centre and is also assisted by a student Social Auxiliary Worker, Sibongile, who is doing her practical with LifeLine.

Tirisano Service Centre – Palm Springs

Tirisano remains the busiest Centre due to the advertising on local Thetha FM radio. Our Supervisors were doing regular talks on the radio and there was a good response from the area. The talks did not take place for some time but we have once again started doing broadcasts every second week.
We have a new Supervisor at Tirisano. Olivia Sekete started her duties at the beginning of March and, although she is sometimes alone, is managing very well and doing a wonderful job. There is also a Social Auxiliary Worker, Cinderella, who is volunteering her services at this Centre twice a week.

Thuthuzela Care Centre

This medico-legal one stop centre has been extremely busy lately. The number of victims attended to average about 135 per month and these victims are all ages – from 3 to 80 - and include male victims as well. During June we managed to secure the services of a Social Worker and this will make our services much more relevant. Phumzile is able to speak Zulu and Sotho and will therefore be able to of great value to the victims.
Our six Lay counsellors continue to offer excellent assistance as far as containment and pre and post HIV test counselling is concerned.
