and troubled to call a telephone number where trained volunteers could offer a 'listening ear' and allow the caller a place 'to be heard'. Soon after the Sydney Centre opened, the American based magazine 'Time' featured the LifeLine service in its International Edition on 24th January 1964.  This brought enquiries from all over the world and centres began to emerge in other cities around the globe. It now has centres in over 200 locations worldwide, including Korea, China, Malaysia, Samoa, Japan, USA, Shanghai, Liberia, Tonga, Ghana, New Zealand, Southern Africa and 40 centres in Australia.

Vaal Triangle LifeLine

The first LifeLine centre to serve the Vaal Triangle started on 14th January 1984 in Vanderbijlpark.  The first call was from a young boy looking for a tortoise.  Since then, the centre has grown in size and now receives 80 telephone calls and has over 100 face to face contacts per month.

The success of the present centre has not always been easy.  The centre is totally reliant on donations and fundraising for it’s existence.  In 1998 the financial income reached a low point and the centre was closed.  Fortunately a good Samaritan obtained premises for LifeLine at the Eventide Old Age Home in Duncanville and this, with the support and prayers of the counsellors, gave the centre a new lease of life.

The centre currently has 60 fully trained counsellors offering support and face to face counselling and now has outreach programmes in a number of the local townships.
